I can’t stand some people at my gym. Social media has ruined people! A lot of people at my gym are ego lifters, gym sluts, and attention seekers. Most of them have 0 gym etiquette ex) sit on machines too long as they group around with their bros and talk, not clearing weights, sitting on their phone, people that walk in with big camera stands when the gym is busy can look ridiculous and get in the way. Most people
Have a shitty attitude, they’re fucking cocky and act like they’re better. People need to leave their ego at the door. It’s mostly the younger crowd in late teens to early 20s I see act like this.

I remember some years ago everyone went to the gym to train hard, uplift one another, help each other get better, and gym etiquette was definitely better too. Nowadays all everyone cares about is how they are portrayed on social media and the amount of likes they get.

I love going to the gym so I keep my headphones in and get in my own zone and try to space them out.

Idk bout where your from, but in my area, there are 1 or 2 gyms that are for serious lifters. No cameras allowed, no fluff. You lose out on any extras you may enjoy like sauna, tanning bed or whatever. But you avoid the riff raft

No BS and just there to train hard that sounds like a good gym.

There are 2 guys who only workout together. You will never see them ever workout alone, I don't think they know how. And they appear recently to recruit a few others as well. For someone reason, it annoys the crap out of me. Lol.

Generalization, I do not get along with the people who act like the gym is life. Kinda ironic considering I do tailor a lot of my life toward progress in the gym, but maybe to be more specific it's the people that it's all they fuckin talk about. Primarily ends up being 18-30 year old folks who touched a barbell once and decided it's their whole personality. The ones who usually make cancerous tiktoks/reels/shorts like "Durr when you durrr the gym durr" followed by a stupid dance or failed lift, the kids that act like lifting a barbell will make up for their trashbag ex fucking 37 other dudes, people who seriously unironically make "Protein-" recipes (cookies, cakes, etc) that taste like total dog shit instead of just drinking the powder and eating the normal snack for the EXACT SAME MACROS but better flavor, and countless other examples. I hate em. Make me sick to my fuckin stomach. 135lb bench presses as far as the eye can see and they think one day when they do a shitty ass-up rep of LOL 2 PLATEZ that they're some Baki the Grappler character. Oldschool Baki ftw btw, new animation ain't as good.

I'm ranting a bit here but fuuuuuuuuuck these people are so annoying. I am friends with plenty of people who lift, but that's just it: They are PEOPLE who go to the GYM. Not GYM PEOPLE. I can't even count how many times random people try to befriend me on socials and ALL THEY TALK ABOUT IS THE GYM. Like seriously do you people do ANYTHING else? Lifts are cool but it's like 4% of my life tops spent in the gym, maybe more idk my math might be shit. Also fuck everyone that worships Bumstead, this shit is the most homo shit I have ever seen. Nothing against gay people, you do you. But this weird ass obsession with the man is creepy as fuck and his mustache makes him look like a pedophile.

These types are also the most insecure motherfuckers in the world, too. I sometimes post my top sets or a PR on my socials and I have noticed that the higher the weights get, the more those types turn into weird, envious, pissy little shits. I'm regularly handling 600ish on squats and deads, 405-500+ on bench and the same people who would've been supportive of me when I was still only moving weights like 225-315 on bench, 365-405 on squat/dead are now just grumpy and looking for any opportunity to attack and try and pretend their inability to do what I do is somehow a good thing. Cue liberal headlines buzz phrase "Why that's a good thing" lol.

Shit is just so weird to me. I got into this shit years ago before Facebook was even a thing and we all kinda/sorta fuckin used Myspace if it loaded the damn page at all, and back then the internet chatter wasn't too bad. Occasionally a retard or two appeared, but it was mostly all good and supportive the way that people actually fuckin acted in real life. Now? It's just a place for weaker people to try and shit on stronger people while also acting like they're dEdIcAtEd AF and better than everyone else. Shit is weird. Make it make sense lol, I do not get the modern gym 'crowd' at all.
My gym has just had a bit of an influx of what I call "Cross Fag" which is a bunch of teeners and 20 somethings jumping and bouncing around like a herd of kangaroos on fucking acid. Now there are 3 legit cross fit gyms here one is run of the mill and the other two are top shelf but you got to pay a few bucks for a cross fit place like that you know! where as the standard gym is less money per month. So you get the tied up pieces of equipment and multi colored hair soy boys posing taking photos and making vids and flexing in the mirrors like everyone else has been saying in this thread. I digress though as the situation will sort its self out as these types get injuries from being fucking stunned and doing stupid shit and the others loose interest when they don't become tic tok or Instagram stars they will fade away it's just a waiting game thank fuck I don't go near tren or halo might be a mushroom cloud at some point if I was still hardcore like back in the day as us old bastards like to say.

Wait … does anyone who body builds even fuck with cross fit? I kind of assumed the cross fit cult was a bit of a joke amongst lifters. At least in my area they’re a cult.

I do understand this sentiment very very well. I used to be the eager kid that kept to himself and started lifting after a break up to get just "big and strong like ZYZZ". This was not that long ago but right before social medias became the only way to make sure people know you lift. Anyways, I thought I was just a kid doing my own thing as the sport was not so popular and never tried to bother others. Now I'm upper 20s and it is a chore to go to the gym now because I see the younger guys and groups that frolic around and do their thing. Now do not get me wrong, I adore seeing the beginners and the people just trying to start out and get their mindset to make the gym a part of their life. I admire it because man 9 years ago or so that was me too. A skinny ass kid who had piss form and no muscle. Now it is not the case but I can't project negativity on these people because I am sure I was just as bad and just never realized it at the time. Granted never did the social media route at the time, but with the culture being the way it is, sometimes that is what it takes now. I am not saying it isn't overused because it absolutely is, but I've seen a guy who had no right to bring a camera into the gym filming his sets as a younger guy become a guy who blew out his first pro show in a short amount of time. All I am saying is I totally understand the feeling nowadays, it's a hassle going to the gym when everything is taken and the kids surrounding the cables are flexing in the mirrors in between sets can rub me the wrong way, but as a competitor most of us do the same thing. We still admire ourselves a bit too between sets (or at least I do). Difference being is we have more muscle and maybe didn't bring the phone into the gym.

It really is a cult.

However the more I look around, since I've been here for 5 decades, I'm starting to notice just about everything is a cult in this country. Everyone is looking to find a group to attach their identity.

From education credentials, employment, consumerism, class based on wealth, racial identity, politics, philosophy, religion, spirituality, mysticism. It's a shit show in this country. Almost everyone believes in some sort of bullshit and can't seem to stand strong as an individual and walk away from the nonsense.

I think people naturally want to be a part of a group. We are social animals and with the digitization and atomization of modern society people are craving that feeling of belonging. I do not think that the cult like mentality of everything is a good thing, but it's clear that people would rather conform to the cultishness of a "pseudo tribe" as opposed to the crushing loneliness of modern society. It seems like the lone wolf mentality doesn't work for most people.

I don't think it ever smart to have tribes based on any quality we've been brainwashed to possess.

The more tribal people become the more they act like pricks to those outside the tribe.

We've got racial, religious, workplace, sexual, education, class, political tribes.

This stuff is dangerous when it goes too far and has lots of money, you can end up getting into wars over stuff that doesn't even matter, someone needs to start a trend where we just go back to being a man that has a set of basic needs and no longer holds to any belief system, just utilitarian concerns and the rest is just bullshit to be discarded.
