And the sharps containers cost $2.. use one. I'll dump my syringes in the garbage but the needles go in the sharps container.

Check your local laws, but I usually use an old protein container and have it clearly marked sharps. I add some random stuffing(like paper towels), so even if it opens the sharps may still stay in the container.

That sounds like storing them improperly for a while at ones home then at the very least transferring them in a dangerous way to the sharp container in the bathroom.

Just to be precise, it's needles that are the worry. If you use syringes with removable needles, they don't present the same problem.

If you re-cap your needles, you barely need to give it any more thought.

The most realistic danger is to either yourself to trash disposal folks if a cap falls off while handling them. 99% of the time, if you cap your needles (or fixed-needle syringes) and store them so that their caps can't fall off somehow, there's no real danger of puncture. The caps on separate needles don't really come off accidentally, but some of the caps on insulin syringes aren't the best. Putting those in a 2L bottle with a screw top, or a box that you tape up when you're done, is about all you need to do as long as you re-cap them after use.

IV drug users have a different set of worries, because they sometimes draw blood back into the barrel... used to be called "booting and jacking." If you expose your syringe to your blood, you should consider it to be a biohazard, and take the same precautions as with the needles. Otherwise, you can toss 'em in the regular trash.

Yea I ended up going on my towns website and it says to put them in any type of heavy plastic container (it actually pictures protein powder jug and laundry detergent jug), taped closed, labeled "Sharps" and tossing them in the trash. Much more simple than I thought.

I use a laundry detergent container (any thick plastic container with a lid will suffice), tape it closed, and label it sharps before throwing it in the trash. This is how diabetics are instructed to dispose of their needles as well.

I usually flush them, or leave them uncapped put them into the paper bag I got from the pharmacy and toss them out the window driving through town.
