Getting some acne on my back, shoulders, and arms and I'm thinking about starting Roccutane 20mg to see how I respond. What have your experiences been like?

I did accutane a long time ago when I was a teenager and it works very well but if you have sensitive skin, it could easily leave marks and scars. It's also hard on the liver but I didn't experience any hepatoxic side effects. Worth it in the long run, the acne barely comes back if it ever does.

I wish I had as a teenager although my skin flared up more later in life. Did you go through a purge stage where everything got a lot worse for a while?

What is your dosing going to look like? 20mg a day? For how long?
I plan on seeing how I respond to 20mg/day for at least three months and then reducing the dosage by half every month until I'm off it completely or acne reemerges. This methodology is based off of various protocols I've read about on the internet.

It would be very smart to start low. I'm taking about 25mg a day. split between AM/PM doses.

The standard pharmaceutical dose is around 80mg a day and that is way too much. There are small studies that showed lower dose like 20mg a day gave the same good results with way less side effects.

It's a great drug for me. Just make sure you are drinking plenty of water. You will also need some chapstick all the time because your mouth will get real dry. Try not to pick at the acne. It will become a lot harder to pop the pimples and they might hurt but let the purge stage run its course. My biggest regret is not starting sooner but it definitely works. I was afraid I wouldn't be able to take my shirt off this summer but now I'm really satisfied because I can walk around and feel good about myself.

Those that have done it non prescribed: how do you decide how long to run it? And are there any side effects of running it for less time than you're supposed to like some kind of rebound maybe?
