So im looking to home brew eventually and im sure that im making it more difficult than it is, but while im doing the research i keep getting hung up on the filtering part, i dont understand how the filter attaches, and how you’re supposed to suck it up then filter it or… someone help am retard, if someone has the time and patients to describe step by step filtering part and the parts needed that would be much appreciated

Depends on how much you’re brewing. I personally just use a 1ml syringe(without a needle) and draw 1ml of oil and then snap the syringe in the Whatman tip and push the oil through with my hands.

But I’m usually only doing a couple of grams/20ml at a time. If you’re brewing a lot(like 5+ vials), I’d say you want to get a much bigger syringe like a 5ml and grab a caulking gun to apply pressure. You can push 1ml through a filter by hand. But it’s almost impossible to push the oil through with a 5+ ml syringe.

I also only use 22 Whatman’s to filter… but if you’re doing a LOT of oil, you might want to use a 45 instead. It won’t filter out all of the metal impurities, but it will get most of them. And it’s about 3-4x faster to push the oil through.

45 won’t sterilize. 22 will.

If u want I’ll snap some pics with step by step instructions later this afternoon. Going to be filtering some Tren A. Can even give u some pointers on locating the equipment. I bottle top filter…Fuck all that syringe filter bullshit.

.45um (micron) filters r not adequate to properly sterilize the gear. Sometimes I’ll prefilter just the oil (BEFORE mixing) thru a .45um filter. .22um is the minimum but I take things a step further n do .22um n then a .1um filter.

I would like to see a homebrewing section added to the site

Step by step
  1. All surfaces wiped down with cavi-cide cleaner. Includes work table, vial crimper, n outside of solvent/oil bottles.
https://www.medical-and-lab-supplies.com/sterlization-items/cavicide-surface-disinfectant-wipes.html
  1. All glassware (vials, media bottles, graduated cylinders, stir rods) magnetic stir bars n rubbe/silicon stoppers r washed in an Alconox solution.
Alconox Detergent Cleaning Concentrate 4 lb. Container https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0000WU828/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_kyMYAbKCP5QBS
  1. Rinsed 2×s in distilled water. Set up 2 seperate bins of distilled water. Go from alconox wash to 1st bin of distilled water then to 2nd bin of distilled water. Can usually find it at local grocery store.
  2. From distilled water rinse everything goes into alcohol bath.
https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https://www.ebay.com/ulk/itm/171634297043
  1. From there I place it into 400°F oven for 45-60 min.
  2. From oven everything goes into autoclave
Found one on eBay for descent price
  1. Cover the opening of all glass with tinfoil to help keep out dust, dirt, etc.
  2. In beaker add required BA/BB n raws. Slowly add heat if necessary. Keep tinfoil covering opening to keep shit out of brew.
  3. Once raws dissolve add required amount of oil.

  4. I have a hot plate magnetic stirrer combo. So I use that to stir once oil is added.

Found it on eBay
  1. After a few minutes of stirring I let oil slowly cool a little.
  2. Set up filter to vacuum pump (eBay)

I normally use a media bottle attached to bottle top filter.

If not…n u use the cheap plastic container this can happen if pump is too strong.

Can also use a brake bleeder kits hand pump instead of an electric pump. Can find on eBay, amazon, or try Alibaba site.

LOL. I do NOT miss those vacuum pumps I’ll tell you that.

This isn’t bad for a home-brew operation. Few things I would like to add.
  1. You can be as clean as possible before hand but what matters most is how you transfer the clean-filetred oil to the vials.
  2. The bottle-top filters are good for about 500ml of oil max. They make ones that can account for more, but I’ve never used them. Also note that bottpetop filters are where a majority of fibers can come from.
  3. I prefer the oven as well because autoclaves won’t get to 400+ degrees. If you have to use an autoclave, dry ones work best. Fuck moisture.
  4. Remember tiny particulate matter/carbon is floating around in the oven. I admittedly had a small piece of carbon in a vial once. This was enough to make me reconsider my whole process. I won’t go into all of my tricks of the trade, but simply turning the vials upside down was a good start.
The devil is in the details.

Then here’s how I go from media bottle to vials
  1. Again wipe down all surfaces/tools with cavi-cide wipes. Vial crimper, table, pipete bulb.
  2. Keep all vials covered with tinfoil until ready to fill then immediately cap it.
  3. Use sterile individually wrapped 10mL pipett
  4. Remove lid on media bottle draw up 11 mL.
    Immediately replace media bottle lid.
  5. Remove tinfoil from vial n fill.
  6. Immediately place on rubber/silicon stopper
  7. Crimp
Here it is in action…

That’s a great guide, Jeff.

It’s also why people usually just syringe-filter when brewing for personal use. It’s slower, but all you need to buy is presterilized sealed vials and some .22 syringe filters.

With syringe filters the part that goes onto the barrel is a luer lock. The part that attaches to the needle is a slip tip.

Yeah for the Whatmans. Female side is luer n male side is slip. I think there’s a brand that makes luers on both end but not 100% since I don’t use them often.

Nice writeup Jeff…can’t upstage that but I did some brewing myself last night - +1 for bottle top filters

Right…so much easier than syringe filter. Can get away with syringe if ur filtering under 40-50mL. The amount of time n the beating ur hands take syringe filtering…bottle tops r so worth it. Especially the simple setup like ur using, it makes a world of difference. Pump it a few times to get the vacuum going n then only have to check on it every 5-10 minutes giving a pump or two every so often.

What brand of bottle top filter is that?

Had a few guys recently recommend not using the PES membranes. Look into getting nylon membranes. Supposedly the solvents can eat thru the PES. Think that was the problem I was having with the Tren.
