Rubber stopper breaking off into oil

I’m in the process of my first homebrew and everything has been going fine until it came to pinning this morning. I stuck an 18g in to draw 2cc and noticed that it shredded some of the rubber stopper off into my oil. I bought a 10pack of sterilized finished vials to fill up with my brew but really do not want to have to refilter all of them into new vials unless I have to. Any ideas? I have never had an issue with 18g ripping stoppers up.

Tbh I was under the impression 18s always chewed stoppers up, I wouldn’t draw with anything larger than a 21 but that’s just me. Why would you have to refilter all of your vials if you’ve only chewed up one stopper? Refilter the one that’s fucked up and get a smaller draw needle and you’ll be fine duder. Let us know.

I’ve filled 3 vials so far and all 3 got rubber inside when I tried drawing from them today

Yeah it’s going to keep chewing it up just because 18s are like daggers. They pierce people with that size iirc, but I’d def refilter those and grab up some smaller draw needles. So long as you didn’t buy little girl slin pins just take the extra time to draw with the smaller gauge until the new ones land. You can gently heat (low) the oil with like a candle warmer to make it pull easier depending on the carrier.

I am mainly concerned with getting rubber in the vial again when I stick the filtered syringe in to fill them again

I’ve never drawn with anything bigger than a 25g and as long as I heat it up it takes no time at all. 18g is overkill

Try the following technique. It should prevent coring.

Put the syringe at a 45 degree angle with the tip of the needle on the stopper and the hole facing upward.

While pushing through the stopper, raise the syringe to vertical.

This will help slice through the stopper instead of cutting a circle out.

I use a 20g draw needle.
