Sleep study normal but always tired

Pretty devastated. Got back my at home sleep study results and it came back normal. I didn’t even sleep those 2 nights I had terrible insomnia. I was 100% sure I had some sleep issue because 5 days out of the week I wake up completely exhausted as if I didn’t sleep at all and the worst brain fog/memory. My diet is in check, thyroid was normal last time I checked.

Is there anything else it can be? Any “supplements” that would help me out with the sleep? Would HGH help at all? Any inputs appreciated.

If ur not satisfied with the results maybe a good idea to go try an in-patient sleep study. If u have sleep apnea (most bigger guys do) u litterally stop breathing like 100s of times during the night. It may only wake u for a split second so u don’t even realize it’s happening.

I suffered from insomnia for almost a year after getting clean. Only slept like an hour if that at night. I was so exhausted during the day that I couldn’t even function. It was brutal so I feel ur pain. I tried everything from melatonin to prescription strength sleep meds to antidepressants. Nothing really helped n only made me feel worse during the day.

Be careful with some of those prescription sleep meds they can become habit forming…if u go that route.

I still only sleep like 4-5 hrs a night but it’s better than nothing. What helped me was getting back into the gym. As hard as it was I just took it slow. Began walking around the neighborhood n at first barely made it a block without feeling like I was about to die.

I’d seriously go see a Dr if it’s becoming a problem. They say driving tired is worse than driving drunk. I hope u can find a solution.

Magnesium makes me sleep really well. Take it right before you turn off your lights. It hits fast.

Do you have any sugar problems? Restrict carbohydrates to avoid sugar/carb crash.

Do you get good sun exposure? Try to get sunlight early in the day. Early morning walks.

CPAP changed my life. I did my studies at a sleep center. Had both central and obstructive apneas.

Cardio a few hours before bed always has me sleeping like an infant.

Had it all my life. I thought for sure I had a sleep issue and it runs in the family. My insurance didn’t cover an actual in lab study and I think those at home ones was a waste of money. Might just try to buy a CPAP or something on Craigslist.

They’re not a waste of money at all. In fact, many pulmonologists actually prefer the in-home sleep studies to the in-lab ones. If you’re going to be assessing somebody’s sleep health, it makes a lot of sense to do it in their “native” environment instead of a place they’ve never slept before.

Those labs take people outside of their comfort zone, and they often experience sleep disturbances that they wouldn’t normally have to deal with.

If you think about it, the metrics/vital signs used to screen for sleep apnea are the exact same on an in-home test (respiratory rate/depth, SpO2, etc). You don’t get the bells and whistles like an EEG at home, but most people don’t need to care about that anyway.

Try to get the in lab study if you can. It turns out that one of my problems were plmd (periodic limb movement disorder). My home study showed that my sleep was fine. However at the lab I found out I had really mild apnea sleeping on my back. So I know that my sinusitis issues were contributing to some of my problems.

The major issue were my legs because they kept moving and waking me up. I ended up with a cpap and meds. Initially ropinirole, then pramipexole. Unfortunately, I’m still finding a right combination because these meds along with some others I take ends up making me groggy the next day. So it’s been a catch-22.

If the cost will be too much. There are some ways you can go about figuring it out. If you want to rule out plmd. You can tape yourself while you sleep. If you see yourself shaking/moving a lot then you can try out meds for it. They are pretty cheap to get generic. ropinirole, pramipexole are the most common. Gabapentin is another.

Ideally getting your insurance to cover a cpap machine would be the best because you’re suppose to replace the filter paper once a month, and the mask + tubing every 6 months.

If you want to just get a machine yourself to try. Keep in mind it takes some getting used to and finding a good mask. You should get a auto-pap (auto adjusting). I have the resmed airsense10. I was able to find the practitioner software online. So I have full access to all the data, and make my own adjustments. You don’t really need to make any changes because by default it’ll adjust based off of your reading. However there are some other things you change to make it more optimal (epr, humidity, etc).

Maybe you’re spending too much time in REM sleep? REM sleep consumes a lot of energy, NREM is what repairs your body and stores info for long term memory. Take bloods and see what’s up, maybe a nutrient deficiency test might help. FWIW I started dosing melatonin at .3mg and magnesium malate before bed and it helped keep me out of REM. I knocked out two days ago before I took my pills and the next day I was a disaster lol
