long post, for the sake of being thorough. I’m looking for some words of wisdom from more experienced guys and anyone that competes, or anyone that wants to chime in I guess…

Quick background - started lifting at about 16, fell in love like we all did. Mostly strength based workout and bro shit, decent gains, stuck to basic supps, didnt really know shit about anything, just a lot and I’m a teenager so I stay lean lol… was off and on for a few years but always pulled back to the gym… late teens / mid twenties, focused more on powerlifting, nothing anything too impressive, no ‘real’ competitions, just little bullshit at the gym… At 186lb, 23yr old, I benched 320, pulled 455 and squatted something even less impressive, but could run a 13:45 2 mile, the Army cared lol… did some bastardized powerlifting / crossfit-esque shit through my mid twenties, drank too much and fucked around, diet still shit… went to college and popped out babies, struggling to lift during this time… things settled down a bit around 28yr old, back at, still strength based and bro split style, mix in some wanna-be olympic lifts (mostly hang cleans). 0 AAS usage up to this point. I’m about to be 32 and have been consistent with my training, diet is better, still is the hardest part for me. About 2 years ago, I switched to a mostly bodybuilding program, mostly because I’m done with the cool-guy Army shit and some of my joints have taken a beating - knees, shoulders, elbows…

1st cycle was started right around 31st birthday - 15 weeks 500 Test-E/wk and 50mg anavar for last 6 weeks, 250iu HCG 2x/week, 12.5mg 2x/week. Everything was great, felt good, no real sides other than anavar and Asin wrecking my lipids. I went from 6’ 190lb to 215lb after I cruised for a few months.

Currently 8 weeks (plan on going 15 weeks) into my 2nd cycle, 500 Test E, 300 Deca and 600 EQ, same Asin and HCG protocol, recently donated blood, need to get blood work done. (I know I added 2 compounds at once which is generally discouraged and I understand why). Everything has been going smoothly, a little slow at first but now my strength is moving upwards really well and I’m lookin nice and full, and I feel like I can just kill it in the gym for hours straight, 30 seconds between sets to failure, quadruple drops sets and just beat myself to death and want more, its fucking great. Up to 222lbs when I weight 1st thing in AM, my bathroom scale says Im 20% bf and godamn I hope its wrong lol, I have visible abs but definitely am softer than I usually am, which I’m currently kind of OK with because I’m looking to add size, but its different that I what I used to focus on and still feel the need to go run my guts out to get it off me…

I’ve been in professional school for the past 2 years, the whole time, packing my lunches, eat relatively clean but if my wife and kids want to go out to eat, I will have a burger or something, piece of cake or whatever. And sometimes I have to sacrifice a workout or some sleep for a big exam(s).

I’ve just finished putting together an actual meal plan for myself - 5 meals - 345G carbs, 240G protein, 85G fat, 3100cal… hoping to continue putting on weight which I’m certain I will on this diet. Supplements are still pretty basic - whey, HBCD, fish oil, NAC, preworkout (JYM Pre or EVOGEN), maybe a thermogenic on occasion( EVOGEN)…

Sorry, for being so long winded but every
time someone posts something asking for advice there are 30 comments like “whats your cycle history, goals” etc etc.

I’ve gotten it my mind lately to get on stage. I was thinking NEXT summer, 2019. Probably Men’s Physique just to learn the ropes but I think Classic Physique is the best class there is right now, I just dont feel I will be big enough or have a complete package. I dont have the $ to hire a coach or anything, I’m on that student budget again, its a bitch.
Any resources out there that helped you guys with prep? And what was like for you when you just decided one day, “alright damnit, this is what I’m doing, I’m gonna get ready and get on that stage and fuck shit up” - like family life, school, work etc… what did that transition look like? what’d your cycles, training, diet look like? I understand the basics, Ive read up on quite a bit, just looking for some anecdotes from this particular community.
I know yall muhfuckas full of opinions, lets hear em

Hey brother. I think mens physique is a good place to start if you have that body type. classic is a bit of a diff look not always more muscle, Because I know some pretty jacked physique guys. Just more complete.

If your looking to compete keep in mind its very expensive. starting with food, supplements, Gear, Board shorts or trunks, Tan for the show, Price of the show itself and if your going to spend the money on all that. I would no doubt hire a coach. If your looking to do well you will need a reputable coach that can help you with your prep and posing. Posing is very difficult. I know we make it look easy but your body is twisting and contorting to where it dosent want to go especially with bodybuilding. Its exhausting. twisting flexing breathing all while keepin your midsection sucked in and adjusting and holding. They are tricky positions. physique will be easier but you have to flow with your poses. Otherwise you will look like that guy that has no idea what hes doing, and even if you look great you will not place very well.
sometimes you can find a coach that has posing classes in groups and usually like $35 an hr You can have someone do your prep and take a look at your progression once a week. That would be a good start.I dont recommend using an online coach because a coach will need to look at your physique and make changes weekly then daily when it gets to the last week. Very hard to do with an online coach or by yourself.

When I first started I hired a coach for $300 for my entire prep. He helped me with posing once a week and wrote my diet out and made changes weekly.last week it was daily. He wasn’t the best but at least I had someone knowledgeable accessing my physique for the stage. It wasn’t as Important to me then as it is now so it didn’t take a whole lot away from my family. Now when I’m getting ready to compete we have a family sit down with my wife and kids. my wife is like " kids daddies prepping again so for the next 16 weeks ( At 8 it start to get real bad) Daddies going to be here but not really here. And they try a steer clear Because I am so focused on the show, my training, my diet, my supplements,my cardio,my cooking and my sleeping. Im completely obsessed during that time. when its over its like a light switch. I just click back on. Wifey is like " Nice to have you back".

Training Is always intense. I train with my coach 3 days a week privately. so its insane workouts always changing up. and posing for a couple rounds once or twice a week. As I approach the show its much more intense posing sessions 1 hr long. That helps with drying out and conditioning.

Most of the time Im bulking gaining size holding water. But i stay sub 10% BF and within 25 lbs of my stage weight. my cycles usually consist of high test and either EQ,Tren E or deca. sometimes its test EQ,Deca or Test EQ Tren e. HGH and Insulin is always in. I Hit it hard for a couple months after a show(best time to grow)and then shut down to a trt dose of test for 2 months until I ramp things up again. During the prep its hell on the body thats why I take 2 months off because during the prep Its a little crazy with the amount of shit we use.during that 2 months off I dont start up again until I get all my bloods back to normal. blood pressure, Kidney and liver function as well as HCL,LDL,

As far as diet its real simple We cycle my carbs. 3 low days,3medium one high but low is 75-100 medium is 200 and high is no higher than 300. protine is at 300, the rest is fats. calories start at about 3000 and drop down to about 2200. Im one of those guys.also fasted cardio daily for 40 min. you would think I could handle way more than that at my size but no.Thats my metabolism.

Hope this Helps. Good luck

Damn Pharma, that is a solid ass post. But for real the price of competing cannot be understated. I nearly go broke during every competition season.

Additionally, I know some people who are extremely knowledgable can do everything on their own without a coach, but it kept me more honest than anything knowing that someone who can tell if I had a damn handful of cereal or mis-measured a meal is looking at my physique on a regular basis. In the long run a coach was worth it for me initially, especially if you can find someone that finds out how you grow or shrink better than yourself. Luckily, I paid my coach for the first year and he hasn’t asked a dollar from me since. However like it was said above, even if the coach is used just for your prep, it’s more than just someone making a diet plan and lining out some gear usage, especially if you find someone brutally honest. It’ll keep you in check.

Also to touch on what PharmaHGH mentioned about the mental side of competition. Competition is fun as hell (especially if you win). BUT, doing everything to win for a couple months on end and measuring every single meal, counting every second on a piece of cardio equipment, and feeling like an asshole to everyone around me gets old just to look like a freak on stage for a short amount of time. So while it is fun, if you’re wanting to actually look show ready, make sure you are mentally strong and absolutely willing to do everything because as most national competitors and pros will attest, it can feel like one of the hardest things to swallow in the moment.

Fuck yea, thanks Pharma and Tren that was super in-depth, I appreciate the response. I kind of figured a coach would be out my reach, monetarily, but if I can find someone to help me for 12-16 weeks for a 300 bucks, I think I could swing it, just gonna sell some of this shit I dont need. I know a gym where I’m gonna look for a coach already. I have a buddy that used to compete in BB and still does photoshoots and is a trainer but he is hours away, I may reach out to him just for some words but it really sounds like I need someone in person.

And its the competition that I miss, I get a different kind of competition in professional school, its fairly high-stakes and hard as fuck and 90% of these kids are 8yrs younger than me and way smarter, so I have to outwork them. Without the Army I dont have that overly masculine competition where everything is a fucking competition, I miss it and want to fill it with something, I think thats why my lifting has become much more intense and more of a staple of my life than it was before. I’m just not surrounded by like-minded people anymore, I need to find other local guys that compete or at least take their training seriously, I work out at a Y (because family deal, military discount, kids sports etc) and goddamn its a weird place, I definitely stand out lol.

If anyone else has any input, I’m all ears

Thanks brother your spot on. Def some people who are knowledgeable enough and can do it themselves. IM positive guys like us can. There is just something about being accountable to someone like a coach or mentor that pushes me way beyond what I am able to push my self. Guess thats just how Im built.

I know many coaches who use coaches. Accountability is always good, in addition to making sure you’re on track but mostly towards the end of the prep when you’re depleted and have diet brain they can keep you from sabotaging your physique bc you saw in shit lighting you’re flat so you try and load to fill out, spill because the lighting wasn’t showing what you actually looked like well, now you’re smoothing out headed to the stage and wasted your time and money.

Just an example but people do stupid shit the last minute all the time. They’re dehydrated and probably haven’t slept, can’t blame them.
