Ways to make protein powder less gross?

I think its a texture thing, but no matter what brand or how I mix it, my protein shakes come out this weird fluffy grainy texture. Its honestly so nasty I cannot physically force myself to drink it. I’ve been buying the premade protein shakes, but that shit gets expensive after awhile. A 4 pack of the one I like costs $10, but a whole tub of the power costs $30. I’m gonna run out of money this way.

Any tips? I’ve tried using a regular shaker, a blender, just mixing with a spoon… always that gross texture to varying degrees. I gotta find some magic way to mix it where it comes out with a normal liquid texture. Like the premade shakes you know??

Also feel free to make fun of me for being too much of a baby to drink the weird texture one. I legitimately hate that it grosses me out this much. Its so dumb but I can’t help it.

I buy the optimum nutrition gold standard whey at Costco. It's decent and on sale right now for $48 for 5.6lbs.

In my experience the smoothest whey powder product is iso100 powder, fruity pebbles is the only flavor I've tried and it's good. Mixes up really smooth.

I've never had any issues with texture after mixing whey protein (shaker bottles, ninja blender, even quick spoon mixing with some yogurt) but have had tons of issues with pea/plant protein. The fix there was to blend it with some avocado. The best mixing protein powder I've tried has been from promix nutrition, could even just use a spoon to blend it. It also doesn't taste sweet at all which is a huge plus for me.

Have you tried putting other things in the blender like bananas, frozen blueberries, oatmeal, yogurt? It may change the texture enough.

I have only heard this problem with vegan powder and if you’re mixing with water.

Gold standard protein. Chocolate milk. Greek yogurt. = creamy smooth shakes.

I do currently use vegan powder, just because standard protein powder has given me horrible IBS. I’ve got some pretty bad stomach issues with anything milk related and it sucks.

But, I’ve had the same mixing/texture issues before with normal protein powder too. That was several years ago though, so maybe its gotten better since then. You and someone else both recommended Gold, so I’ll have to try it and see if it kills my gut or not lol

I’ve tried yogurt, and oatmeal, and it didn’t go well. But I’ll try to throw a banana in and see if it helps, thanks

Yeah it definitely seems like its the fact I’m using pea protein powders. It just sucks cuz I have digestion issues that makes whey protein not as much of an option, but I may have to give those another try and deal with sitting on the toilet for awhile after lol.

I’m checking out promix though- have you tried their pea protein option? If that one mixes well, I may try that first.

That's disgusting. I used soy before that wasn't bad on my stomach. I had issues for a while with that. Now I just mostly get protein through food sources and non dairy stuff like muscle milk.

Try adding peanut butter powder to your drink if you haven't. It's cheap and tastes decent

Redcon1 makes "MRE" and "MRE Lite" which are non-milk based protein powders. Beef Protein Isolate, Pea Protein, Brown Rice Protein, Chicken Protein, Egg Albumin, Salmon Protein. You can always try TrueNutrition.com and get non-milk based proteins.

I feel the opposite, I've not used a protein powder that I prefer with milk. I always mix with water. Seems to mix better and results in a more favorable experience.

But yeah, I'm an adult about it. I swill down oral l carnatine mixed with water - that shit tastes like bad fish.

NutraBio whey isolate has no lactose and digestive enzymes added, tastes very good and mixes well.

Dymatize Iso100 is also isolate, being from New England I'm a sucker for Dunkin' flavored whey and they has it!

Never use whey concentrate, I switched to isolate and it smells way better around me. :sneaky:
